Praise God - A Win & A Prayer - 02/28/2010 -
February 28, 2010 - Oracle Arena - Oakland/Alameda County Coliseum - San Francisco SCCA Solo Championship Round 3.

Daybreak greeted glorious weather for the 187 competitors at the SFR SCCA 2010 Championship Round 3, held in Oakland on February 28. Divided into six Run Groups, each car was fed onto the course in 25 second intervals, every driver trying to master the course with just three attempts in the minimum amount of time (ranging from 36 to 68 seconds over the field). All embarked on an attempt to claim victory, in their Class, and for one very skilled individual, overall.

For most, the pursuit of a top placing finish amongst these chariots eclipses all other intentions and pursuits for the day. But for many, it's about being amongst like minded people (car people), and the competition results at the end of the day are not the sole motivation for participation. Just observe for a short while and you'll see people helping people, a few taking on the pre-planned responsibilities of managing the event from begging to end, and others just pitching in as asked. The environment at an autocross is really friendly and competitive at the same time; the racing ranging from on-track to the bench and today was no exception.

Our motivation was to do God's will, whatever he presented us and to try and represent our attempt to walk with Jesus in the way He would have us. To begin with, Mark Scroggs joined the team today, running out of class (not for position or points) as he had a previous commitment and couldn't drive his own car at its assigned time. It's always more fun with a partner and especially when he's a Christian brother, not to mention one of the top drivers in the Region. Long story short, as Mark was learning to drive the RX-8 on race tires for the first time, another friend, Matt Francavilla, set the bar for the Class on his very first run, a 41.897. Then on Mark's very next run he set the time that would stand for the Class, although it wasn't scored (by Mark's choice to not impact the points race).

When the 21 competitive runs were all tallied, we won by a meer .068 seconds. While it makes for a pretty good story for a bench racing session, our very favorite part of the day was when we learned were allowed to pray for a competitor facing major surgery and a extended recovery period.

Matt's first run is his fastest, a 41.897, setting the bar for everyone in C-Stock.
